Simplifying your experience: Sumo Logic’s UI evolution

As organizations modernize their applications and deliver more complex, cloud-based services, the traditional boundaries between DevOps, SecOps, and ITOps are disappearing. Seamless collaboration between these teams, often referred to as DevSecOps, has become essential for efficiently addressing both reliability and security challenges.

Sumo Logic provides a unified platform that integrates observability, security analytics, and cloud monitoring, enabling teams to work together seamlessly to troubleshoot issues faster, and maintain a holistic view of system performance and security. To support further collaboration, Sumo Logic is excited to announce the launch of our latest UI redesign, available as an opt-in option for all our customers.

Using feedback we’ve received through surveys, usability studies and input from our community, we’ve redesigned the UI to provide a more unified and intuitive navigation experience, making it easier to find and access your most used features. We’ve also made a shift to browser based tabs allowing you to better leverage your browser’s capabilities, along with stateful URLs that provide quicker and easier content sharing. Together these updates are designed to make your interactions with Sumo Logic faster, more intuitive, more efficient, and further empower you to work seamlessly across the different features and products Sumo Logic provides.

A fresh navigation approach

With the new UI redesign Sumo Logic is bringing observability, Cloud SIEM, and Cloud SOAR offerings together under one unified navigation system, providing a consistent navigation experience regardless of the product area you are working within. We’ve also streamlined the layout of the navigation to make it easier to locate and access the features you care about most.

We started out by moving the library of content items into a sub-navigation, creating the space needed to provide you with additional primary menu options.

We then organized the main menu to ensure quick and easy access to the rest of Sumo Logic’s most essential features. This includes key functionalities like logs search, dashboards, Cloud SIEM, Cloud SOAR, and observability features such as metrics, infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring (APM), and real user monitoring (RUM). By streamlining access to these important features we aim to simplify your workflows and improve your overall efficiency when navigating through the platform.

Configuration, administration, user preferences and the help menu, are all now accessed through the global toolbar located within the top right of the application, providing a better separation between the features used on a daily basis and the management and configuration functions used less frequently.

A shift to browser tabs

Another significant change you will see within the new UI is a shift from the in-product tabs to the use of native browser tabs. Browsers offer a more feature-rich tabbing experience that you can now take full advantage of while using Sumo Logic and offers a more consistent browsing experience as compared to other web applications you may commonly use.

By using browser tabs, along with the addition of the stateful URLs, you can now take advantage of common browser actions such as moving forward and back through pages, or easily move tabs to new browser windows for side-by-side comparisons. In addition, using native browser tabs allows you to take advantage of your browser history, add bookmarks to commonly used Sumo Logic pages, or use other browser capabilities you’re familiar with such as tab grouping.

Along with the usability benefits, browser tabs also provide some performance improvements over the in-product tabs. By moving to browser tabs, we’re able to load individual feature dependencies separately, and reduce memory consumption, which has provided a 2-5x improvement in the time it takes to load the application as compared to the previous UI. Additionally, because tabs can be loaded in the background of your browser, switching between them is virtually instantaneous, with no noticeable load time after the initial load.

Stateful URLs

When troubleshooting an issue, collaboration within your team is crucial. Teams often need to share queries with each other, but this previously required locating specified sharing options to generate a shareable URL. As an advantage of the browser tabs, we now make the sharing of content easier through the use of stateful URLs.

Any changes you make in the UI will now be reflected in the URL found within your browser address bar. This allows you to easily share the exact state of a page with your teammates by simply copying and pasting these URLs to share! This also removes issues and concerns with the deleting of content, which would previously invalidate the shared URLs, leading to invalid pages. With stateful URLs it is now safer to share your URLs within documentation or troubleshooting playbooks without fear of those URLs becoming invalid and leading to future errors.

Creating a more unified experience

These updates are just the beginning of our journey to improve the Sumo Logic UI and further unify the experience across our product offerings. Over the coming months we’ll continue to provide refinements and enhancements that bring additional consistency to the look and feel across the platform.

If you are an existing customer, you can explore the new UI by selecting the “Switch to new UI” button in the main navigation of the classic interface. If you wish to switch back, simply click “Return to Classic UI” from the new UI primary navigation.
